Missing Teen From Beijing Safely Located In West Hollywood

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Officials safely located a 16-year-old on Monday who was reported missing while touring colleges with his mother.

According to the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station, Jin Wuwei was found sitting on a bench around 2:00 p.m. at a bus stop, located  in the 8400 block of Sunset Boulevard.

Authorites explained Wuwei is doing okay, and was transferred to the Claremont Police Station to be reunited with his mother.

According to the Claremont Police Department, Jin Wuwei traveled to the U.S. with his mother, Jipeng Geng, about two weeks ago to tour colleges in California.

On Feb. 3, they arrived in Northern California to look at colleges, and then traveled to Claremont on Wednesday.

According to Geng, on Friday the 13th, Wuwei insisted he tour the campus alone while his mother went shopping.

Police said Wuwei was last seen leaving the Claremont Lodge around 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Video surveillance showed the teen walking away with a backpack and carrying a bag, officers added.

CBS2's Amber Lee spoke with Geng, who explained it seemed like her son didn't want her to go with him to tour the campus.

According to police, detectives did not find anything that pointed to foul play.

"The mother says Jin Wuwei walked away with a couple hundred dollars, a credit card, and a cell phone," said Sgt. David De Metz.

Officers reported there was no activity on the credit card, and it seemed as though the cell phone had been turned off.

The family hired a private investigator to assist in the search. Wuwei's father also flew in from Beijing on Friday morning.
