Police Pursuit Near South LA Ends In Crash

GARDENA (CBSLA.com) — A police pursuit through much of South LA concluded with a violent crash on Monday night.

The pursuit began around 9:15 p.m., with LA Sheriff's describing the vehicle as a brown van. The suspect was wanted for reckless driving and DUI.

The suspect was traveling westbound near Centennial High School, and turned south on Broadway St. at Rosecrans Ave.

Near the Links at Victoria golf course, the suspect got on the 110 freeway, heading north, before exiting eastbound on Redondo Beach Blvd., near West Rancho Dominguez.

The pursuit concluded with a violent crash at Budlong and Rosecrans, at a casino parking lot at about 9:35 p.m. The van crashed into a red jeep after a running a red light.

The victim driver, a woman, was being placed in an ambulance. The suspect was taken into custody, and was being medically treated on the scene.

The victim's vehicle was thrown into a pole as a result of the collision.

"Out of nowhere, I didn't hear any sirens, all you hear is just a big explosion," witness Angel Cobenad said. "I turned around and I noticed a van hit the casino and I just saw a bunch of cops rushing out of their vehicles, just pounding hard."

The event resulted in traffic being diverted away from the scene.
