Bermuda Dunes Resident Fatally Shoots Alleged Prowler

BERMUDA DUNES (CBSLA.com)  —   Deputies said a Bermuda Dunes homeowner fatally shot an alleged prowler early Saturday morning.

Bermuda Dunes is located in Riverside County near Palm Springs.

Deputies were dispatched to a home in the 41500 block of Maroon Town Drive around 3:30 a.m. regarding multiple calls about a prowler in the neighborhood.

About ten minutes after the dispatch call, a woman called to say her husband shot an intruder inside their home -- near the 46100 block of Adams Street -- one block east of the original call, said Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Erickson.

"The first deputy arrived within two minutes and moved the distraught family members to safety, secured the scene and located the suspect who was still inside their residence suffering from two gunshot wounds," he said.

The deputies administered first aid and called for an ambulance.

The suspect was taken to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital where he was declared dead about 5:20 a.m., Erickson said.

Authorities said the homeowner and his family were fully cooperative with detectives and no arrests were made.

On Sunday, authorities identified the deceased as Cesar Garcia, 32, of Indio.

The case remains under investigation by the sheriff's Central Homicide Unit, Erickson said.
