Van Nuys Man Charged With Illegally Practicing Immigration Law

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Van Nuys man faced multiple criminal charges Thursday for illegally practicing immigration law, prosecutors said Thursday.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports Jesus Luna Lozano, 52, was already under a 2003 permanent injunction for practicing immigration law without a license when investigators say he was found doing it again in a storefront in Van Nuys.

City Attorney Mike Feuer was on hand along with undercover agents from the Department of Consumer Affairs to announce charges against Lozano, which includes unauthorized practice of law, three counts of violating the Immigration Consultant Act for failing to post proper bonds and notice; failure to provide a written contract; and violation of a permanent injunction.

If convicted, Lozano could face up to more than five years in jail.

Prosecutors say that Lozano gave legal advice to undercover investigators two times in December, violating state law and his 2003 permanent injunction.

"My office is fighting to prevent immigration fraud schemes from ripping off families and destroying their dreams," Feuer said. "We will prosecute scam artists who try to victimize immigrants to the fullest extent of the law."

Feuer urged victims of immigration consultant fraud to call the Department of Consumer Affairs at (800) 593-8222.
