Police Call Deadly Redondo Beach Bus Crash A 'Tragic Accident'

REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police Thursday were calling a South Bay bus crash that killed an elderly man a "tragic accident".

An elderly couple was trying to cross the street in the 1700 block of S. Catalina Avenue around 6:30 p.m. when they were hit by the bus making a left turn.

Police were trying to determine if the couple walked in front of the bus or were already in the intersection when the accident happened.

Both of the victims were pinned underneath the bus. The unidentified 83-year-old man was declared dead at the scene while his companion, described as a woman in her 70s, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

"We're still trying to determine the identities. We don't know if they were married or not, but they were an elderly couple and walking together," said Sgt. Shawn Freeman, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, which operates the bus.

No one else was injured.

Locals say the intersection is very dangerous.

"This corner really needs to be addressed, I think the mayor needs to address it because we've seen other accidents here in broad daylight," said Gentil Smith.

Authorities said alcohol and drugs were ruled out in the crash.
