Torrance Post Office Burglar Sentenced To 5 Years In Federal Prison

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A burglar who broke into Southern California post offices and stole boxes of mail has been sentenced to five years in federal prison.

The U.S. attorney's office says Jose Guerra of Los Angeles was sentenced Wednesday. He pleaded guilty last fall to postal burglary.

Authorities say he used a crowbar to break into the post office in north Torrance in 2013, acknowledged at least two other break-ins and may have been involved in five more.

Authorities say Guerra altered some stolen checks and cashed them for about $1,800.

He was arrested in December of 2013 in New Mexico, where authorities say they found checks, credit cards, bank statements, identification and other mailed items at his residence there.
