Video Shows Interrogation Of Woman Caught Stuffing Lunch Money In Bra

RIALTO (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have released recordings of an interrogation session involving a former Rialto Unified School District accountant being questioned about stolen district funds.

Judith Oakes, 50, has since been sentenced to county jail for embezzling $1.8 million in district lunch money.

Rialto police Detective Mike Morales is seen in the footage questioning Oakes, 50, who at the time, had just been captured in security footage stealing thousands.

Morales: "Really, Judith? Stop lying. Just stop lying to me."
Morales: "You've been doing this for a long time."
Oakes: "No, I haven't."
Morales: "Well, how long have you been doing it for?"
Oakes: "Yesterday and today."

During the interrogation, Morales is also seen confronting Oakes with evidence found at her home.

Morales: "That's a lot of money."
Oakes: "Looks like just ones."
Morales: "No, it's not. There's over $4,000 in there."
Oakes: "My husband and I for years … years … have kept cash at the house."
Morales: "Judith?"
Oakes: "I did, I honestly did."
Morales: "Judith, come on."
Oakes: "Do I need my lawyer?"
Morales: "I don't know. I can't answer that for you."

Morales told CBS2's Tom Wait it's not clear if Oakes feels any remorse.

"It may be a mixed emotion that she has, you know, she's sorry that she did get caught because now she's going to be spending time in jail," he said.

"At one point she spent $30,000 to cover a monthly credit card bill. There were previous checks written to this credit card company," Rialto police Captain Randy De Anda said.

The investigation has since been closed.

Oakes pleaded guilty to nine counts of misappropriating public funds. She could spend three years behind bars due to a plea deal, according to Wait.
