Police: Carjacking Suspects Dropped Off Kids Found In Stolen Car

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — Two men suspected of driving off in a vehicle in Fontana with two children inside were in police custody Monday, authorities said.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports police say the episode began Saturday afternoon when a father pulled over near Whipple Street and Burnside Place to read a yard sale sign.

When the victim got out of the vehicle and left it running, two suspects later identified as Robert Medina, 21, and Daniel Medina, 18, got in the car and drove off with a boy and girl ages 6 and 9 inside the stolen vehicle, according to Fontana Police spokeswoman Martha Guzman-Hurtado.

Once the suspects realized children were in the backseat, they dropped them off near the northbound I-15 on-ramp at Baseline Avenue, Guzman-Hurtado said.

"Something you never think can happen, but this is obviously an example that these situations do happen," she said. "So the lesson here, don't leave your vehicle running unattended. Ever."

Officers later observed the vehicle in Ontario near Mission and Sultana and pursued the suspects for about one block before the duo turned onto railroad tracks, blew a tire and struck a pole, according to Guzman-Hurtado.

After a brief foot chase, officers took the suspects into custody. Both suspects were booked at West Valley Detention Center and face carjacking and kidnapping charges.
