Encino Doctor Sentenced To Jail For Unlawful Prescription Of Narcotics

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 69-year-old physician was sentenced to prison Thursday for prescribing narcotics without a legitimate medical need.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Yahya Hedvat was ordered to spend two years in jail.

Hedvat was originally sentenced to a total of seven years in prison; however, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Dennis Landin suspended five years.

Officials explained Hedvat operated a medical clinic named Urgent Care in Encino.

In November 2014, he pleaded no contest to 11 counts in a grand jury indictment that were contained in two separate cases against him.

Hedvat also admitted the allegation that he was out on bail when a second case was filed against him in August.

In October 2013, he was charged with unlawfully prescribing controlled substances, including hydrocodone, suboxone and clonazepam,  without a legitimate medical need.

According to authorities, Hedvat agreed to sell additional drugs, including Norco and Ativan, to an undercover agent with the California Medical Board just after voluntarily surrendering his DEA license to prescribe controlled substances.

Hedvat was ordered to surrender Feb. 18 to begin serving his sentence, the District Attorney's Office said.
