2 Teen Brothers Sentenced For Fatal 2013 Stabbing On High School Campus

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com)  —  Two teen brothers were sentenced Thursday for their role in the 2013 fatal stabbing of a student on the campus of Cleveland High School in Reseda.

Anthony Carpio, 18, was sentenced to 16 years to life  and Michael Steven Carpio, 20, was sentenced to 15 years to life, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Scott Marcus said.

Both Carpios were members of a street gang. They were each found guilty Oct. 31 of one count of second-degree murder of 18-year-old Kevin Orellana, who was not a gang member.

A third co-defendant, Michelle Pineda, 21, was sentenced Nov. 4 to two years in county jail after pleading no contest to one felony count of accessory after the fact with knowledge of a crime.

On April 24, 2013, the brothers approached Orellana as he played handball at Grover Cleveland High School, the prosecutor said. The defendants issued a gang challenge and a fight ensued, according to court testimony.

Witnesses said that Anthony Carpio stabbed Orellana during the fight. The Carpio brothers then ran into a vehicle driven by Pineda, Marcus said.

CBS2's Randy Paige said the Carpio brothers sat expressionless in the Van Nuys courtroom when Judge Martin Herscovitz pronounced sentence.

Before sentencing, Marcus read a victim-impact statement prepared by Orellana's family.

"As a parent, we plan to dance at their wedding, celebrate a promotion, look forward to possible grandchildren. The last thought we would ever have is that we would have to plan their funeral," Marcus said from the statement.

The two brothers will not be eligible for parole until at least 2028.
