Santa Barbara Smokehouse Cold-Smoked Salmon Products Recalled

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Officials warned the public on Friday to not eat certain Santa Barbara Smokehouse cold-smoked salmon products, due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Santa Barbara Smokehouse voluntarily recalled two batches of cold-smoked salmon, which were manufactured in August and September of 2014.

Officials explained they learned of the Listeria contamination through product-surveillance and environmental samples, which were collected at the processing facility in Santa Barbara.

Recalled salmon was packed under the Cambridge House, Channel Island Smokehouse, Coastal Harbor, Santa Barbara Smokehouse and Harbor Point brand names, which were vacuum-packed and distributed as both fresh and frozen products, authorities explained. Other brands may include Fresh & Easy, Tetsujin and Imperial House.

According to the CDPH, pack dates include Aug. 22, 2014, Sept. 17, 2014, through Sept. 19, 2014, and Dec. 17, 2014, through Dec. 24, 2014.

Health officials said the brands were likely distributed to wholesale food distributors, airline catering companies and food service distributors.

Due to the contamination at the facility, CDPH officials were concerned that other cold-smoked salmon products, that were produced at the facility on other dates, may be available in stores or already purchased by consumers.

Santa Barbara Smokehouse voluntarily stopped all manufacturing and product distribution at this time, while authorities work to determine potential sources of contamination in the processing center.

Anyone that may be in possession of products that were packed during the dates listed above should immediately throw them away.

CDPH officials recommended that anyone who feels sick after eating cold-smoked salmon products should consult their health care provider.

Common symptoms of Listeria may include a high fever, neck stiffness and headache.

No illnesses have been associated with the recalled products at this time, officials explained.

Anyone who sees cold-smoked salmon manufactured by Santa Barbara Smokehouse being sold are urged to report the activity to the CDPH at (800) 495-3232.
