Late First-Half Surge Powers UC Davis Past CSUN, 71-61

DAVIS (CBSLA.com/AP) — Tyler Les scored 15 points off the bench — draining five 3-pointers — to help UC Davis to a 71-61 win over Cal State Northridge in the Big West Conference opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Avery Johnson added 14 points and four rebounds for the Aggies (10-4, 1-0). Corey Hawkins and Josh Fox scored 11 points apiece and Josh Ritchart had nine. The team finished its balanced effort shooting 50.9 percent from the field, 71.4 percent from the line and hitting 12 of 25 (48 percent) from 3-point territory.

Trailing 27-25 with 5:11 left in the first period, UC Davis went 19-4 to finish out the half leading 44-31.

The Aggies extended their advantage to 56-40 early in the second half on back-to-back 3-pointers by Les and Ritchart and cruised to the win.

Stephen Maxwell led the Matadors (4-12, 0-1) with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Stephan Hicks had 15 points.

Aaron Parks added 11 points off the bench, and Devonte Elliot scored 10 points for CSUN, which visits Hawai'i on Sataurday night.
