Man Hurt While Throwing Burning Christmas Tree Out Second-Story Window

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — A man was burned Monday when he tried throwing a burning Christmas tree out the window of his second-story apartment.

Crews were called shortly before 4 p.m. to a three-story building, zoned as residential and commercial, at Ninth Street and Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica Deputy Fire Chief Tom Clemo said.

The building's sprinklers managed to douse the flames.

Firefighters were investigating why the tree went up in flames and said it "may have been an electrical short."

The man was taken to a hospital with second-degree burns.
