Travelers Returning Home From Holiday Weekend Facing Traffic Gridlock

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Thousands of Southern Californians returning home Sunday from the holiday weekend hit traffic gridlock at LAX and the freeway from Las Vegas back into California.

At 2 p.m., LAX police advised that traffic was choked at the arrival and departure loop roadways.

Freeway traffic services reported Interstate 15 was jammed from outside Las Vegas to Primm, Nev., where the southbound freeway narrow from three to two lanes.

Cars were backed up slightly at Barstow, where the 15 and 40 freeways merge together, but drivers were met with smooth sailing on the rest of the 15, especially considering some of the "Barstow backups" reported in years past.

The 101 Freeway from Santa Barbara to L.A., the 5 over the Grapevine and the 10 from the Coachella Valley had no traffic jams as of mid-afternoon.

No major backups were reported on freeways in Orange and San Diego counties.

Roads to and from mountain resorts in Wrightwood, Big Bear, Idyllwild and Julian were jammed with snow play enthusiasts, the CHP reported. But all major roads were open and clear of chain controls.
