UC Irvine Dominates Hampden-Sydney, 82-53

IRVINE (CBSLA.com/AP) — Alex Young scored 13 points with six assists and four rebounds as UC Irvine beat Division III Hampden-Sydney 82-53 on Wednesday.

Dominique Dunning posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Anteaters (7-6). Mike Best scored 10 points and Travis Souza had nine. The team hit 66.1 percent from the field and outrebounded Hampden-Sydney 39-19.

Anteaters head coach Russell Turner is a 1992 Hampden-Sydney College graduate, and also served as an assistant at the private Virginia school before moving on to stints with Wake Forest, Stanford and the Golden State Warriors. He holds the school record for career points with 2,272, and was a first-team all-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection for four years.

UC Irvine jumped to a 24-8 advantage early in the first quarter on Wednesday, and led 35-18 at the break.

Furious back-and-forth action in the first four minutes of the second half resulted in 23 total points scored by both teams with Souza and Dunning combining for three 3-pointers and the Tigers' Mitch Owens and Greg Lewis each sinking a trey. UC Irvine went up 70-45 on a layup by Jaron Martin with 6:52 to play and the Anteaters never looked back.

Guilherme Guimaraes scored 11 points off the bench for the Tigers.
