LAPD: 'Ringing In The New Year With Gunfire Will Not Be Tolerated'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Officials advised the public on Wednesday to ring in the New Year with caution.

The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have joined forces to launch their Citywide Gunfire Reduction Campaign, which is aimed to reduce incidents of random gunfire on New Year's Eve.

According to officials, celebrating the start of 2015 with gunfire will not be tolerated.

Discharging a firearm into the air is punishable by one year in state prison, police explained.

Authorities are expected to hold a news conference around 10:00 a.m. at police headquarters, to advise the community against participating in the deadly New Year's Eve tradition known to occur across Los Angeles County.

Officers explained that anyone arrested for discharging a firearm during celebrations this evening will be prosecuted with maximum sentences.
