Dozens Of Montebello Apartment Tenants Without Heat, Hot Water As Cold Weather Sets In

MONTEBELLO (CBSLA.com) — Imagine going through this cold snap with no heat or hot water.

That's what's happening for dozens of apartment tenants.

Robert Gonzalez said he's been without heat for days in his apartment.

"Everybody's been telling ... no heat," he said.

And it's about to get a lot colder.

About 115 apartments in the Tierra del Sol apartments on Fourth Street in Montebello haven't had gas. No hot water, no stoves since Christmas Eve, Southern California Gas Co. confirmed to CBS2/KCAL9.

Residents were sent a notice Dec. 24 from the management company, Cirrus Asset Management.

Tenant Veronica Avina said says she hasn't been able to cook meals for her children for nearly a week.

"No hot water. No gas,"Avina said.

"Microwave and takeout. ... Very expensive."

Avina and her kids have to drive to grandma's house 10 miles away for a hot shower.

SoCal Gas said gas leaks were discovered in the house line between the meter and the apartments.

They said anything beyond the meter is the landlords responsibility to fix.

A resident said Gregory Karp is the regional manager for Cirrus Asset Management.

He offered no comment.

The management team did send out a notice Monday stating tenants would receive a daily rent credit for the days without gas service.

A SoCal Gas spokesperson said contractors finished their work Monday night.

Workers showed up Tuesday morning to restore service to as many apartments as possible.
