Second Suspect Remains At Large After Shooting At LAPD Officers In South LA

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A second suspect remained on the loose Monday after an attack on Los Angeles Police Department officers.

The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at 62nd and Hoover streets in South Los Angeles, officials said.

Two LAPD officers were responding to an unrelated call in the area when two suspects opened fire at their patrol car.

"One of our officers returned fire, and the two individuals who had shot at the officers fled into the neighborhood," Det. Meghan Aguilar said.

A citywide tactical alert went in effect.

A short time later one suspect was taken into custody for questioning, and a perimeter was set up for a search for the second suspect. At least one weapon was discovered nearby.

No one appeared to be injured by the gunfire.

The search for the second suspect, consisting of more than 60 officers, a K-9 unit and an LAPD helicopter, continued until about 5:45 a.m. Monday and the tactical alert was cancelled around that time.

The suspect, who is believed to be between 18 and 25 years old, was not located.

"Our investigators are going to work on leads," Lt. Andy Neiman said. "I don't know if we have an individual in mind at this point that we're looking for."

The motive was unclear, but the crime took place after two New York City police officers were killed.

"We're unaware of any specific ties to this happening in New York. Of course that's something we'll be looking at," Det. Aguilar said. "It's a nationwide conversation right now, so it's not something we'll discount or ignore."

The investigation was ongoing.
