Beach Cities On High Alert As Surf Expected To Reach 14 Feet By Week's End

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — The National Weather Service has issued a coast hazard warning due to big surf expected later this week from a winter storm.

Orange County has erected large berms near the Balboa Pier to protect parking lots and dwellings from waves which were anticipated to reach 12-to-14 feet by the end of the week.

"I think that the preparation is very good, I've been watching them prepare with a bulldozer in the sand," Ann Hellewell, who is visiting from Idaho, said.

The swell started to move into the area Tuesday with waves expected to hit eight feet Wednesday and 10 feet Thursday.

"We have a lot of people participating in the surf. Even though it's not very large, it's decent size surf for these guys to have some fun," Newport Beach Lifeguard Chief Rob Williams said.

The high surf was not expected to reach heights seen during the summer from Hurricane Marie.

The advisory will be in effect through later Saturday, the NWS said.

The NWS has also issued a high surf advisory for Ventura County.
