Police Brutality Protests Move To Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — There were more protests against police brutality in Hollywood on Saturday night, including the Friday night shooting death of an assault suspect.

At Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reported that tourists found themselves thrust into the national debate over fatal police actions here in Los Angeles and around the nation.

On Saturday night, there were only a handful of protesters, but earlier in the day it was a much larger crowd. Organizers dubbed this march "BlackOut Hollywood." And it drew actors as well some first-time demonstrators who said the tipping point was the grand jury decision in the choke-hold death of Eric garner in New York City .

"We are all human beings living on this earth, that's nothing I have to explain to you or anybody," said Asariah Towery. "But we're all here supporting a cause. Nobody should be harassed or killed for no reason."

"There are a lot of good cops, and we support them, but we need them to come out and stop having this weak brotherhood of protection of the cops who just don't care," added another woman.

Many protestors wore black and wound their way up Highland Avenue on Saturday. The demonstration was extremely civil, athough protestors did stage a "die-in," temporarily blocking traffic on the corner where Los Angeles police shot and killed a man Friday night.

Facebook video captured the aftermath of Friday's shooting. Police with guns drawn hovered over an assault suspect they say had a knife.

Street performer Bruce Cherry said he saw the whole thing.

"He had his hands outside of his pockets," Cherry said Friday night. "When they ran up on him he went inside of his pockets and stuck both of his hands inside of his pockets, And then that's when they pulled out of him, that's when the shots rang out."

The LAPD has not released the name of the man killed at Hollywood and Highland on Friday, and said the incident remains under investigation.
