3 Convicted In Colby Fire Ordered To Pay $9M
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three men who were convicted of causing a Los Angeles-area wildfire that destroyed homes and forced thousands to flee have been ordered to pay $9 million in restitution.
The Whittier Daily News says a federal judge in Los Angeles ordered the payments Monday.
The money would compensate fire victims, insurers, police, fire and other public agencies.
Burning paper from an illegal campfire sparked the Colby fire in January in the Angeles National Forest.
Santa Ana winds pushed the 1,900-acre blaze, which destroyed five homes and 17 structures and forced mass evacuations in the foothill cities of Azusa and Glendora.
Jonathan Jarrell, Clifford Henry Jr. and Steven Aguirre were convicted of fire-related charges.
Henry and Aguirre got several months in prison. Jarrell awaits sentencing.
