'La Tia' Wins $300K Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes At Del Mar

 DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — La Tia led all the way to win the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths Sunday on closing day of Del Mar's fall meet.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, La Tia ran a mile on the Jimmy Durante turf course in 1:35.37 and paid $6.60, $3.40 and $2.60 as the 2-1 second choice in the field of seven older fillies and mares.

Queen of the Sand returned $4.40 and $2.80, while Discreet Marq was another half-length back in third and paid $2.20 to show as the 3-2 favorite.

The victory, worth $180,000, increased La Tia's career earnings to $983,326, with 10 wins in 23 starts.

In the $150,000 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes for 2-year-olds, even-money favorite Conquest Typhoon rallied from last to win by a half-length.

Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Conquest Typhoon ran a mile on the grass in 1:36.93 and paid $4, $3 and $2.40.

Stormy Liberal returned $7.60 and $5, while Rock Shandy was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $4.80 to show.

The victory, worth $90,000, increased Conquest Typhoon's career earnings to $352,065, with two wins in six starts. He finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
