APPLE VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 16-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle in Apple Valley.

The juvenile was pronounced dead at a hospital at 1:26 a.m. Wednesday, hours after the traffic collision on Mohawk near Viento roads.

Deputies responded to the scene following the 5:19 p.m. accident Tuesday and found the teen on the shoulder of the roadway with major injuries to his head and torso.

The boy was airlifted to a hospital where he was stabilized. He was then flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he later died, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County sheriff-coroner department said in a written statement that the driver of a Jeep Cherokee suspected of striking the boy remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident was asked to call Deputy Greg Teplansky at (760) 240-7400.
