Water Main Break Shuts Down Benedict Canyon Drive

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 12-inch water main break closed Benedict Canyon Drive Tuesday morning and the road is expected to remain closed through the afternoon commute.

Water started gushing to the surface just south of Mulholland Drive in the 3200 block of Benedict Canyon at about 7:20 a.m.

Kim Hughes of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said crews have had to take off-line two 6-inch pipes that fed into the damaged 12-inch pipe.

About 20 people have had their water service disrupted, but no homes were flooded, she said. Benedict Canyon is closed from Wallingsford Drive to Hutton Drive and motorists were advised to use Beverly Glen or Coldwater Canyon as alternatives.

Initially, repairs were projected to take about seven hours, but Hughes said the road likely would be closed through the afternoon commute.

Hughes crews are working as quickly and as safely as possible, but its not known when the repairs will be completed.
