Possibly Suicidal Man Taken Into Custody Following Hours-Long Standoff In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles police SWAT officers took a possibly suicidal man into custody early Monday following a 7 1/2–hour standoff at a Sylmar home, authorities said.

The man, who is in his 60s, was in custody as of 12:45 a.m. and was taken to a hospital this morning for a mental evaluation after SWAT officers fired tear gas into the residence to flush him out, Los Angeles Police Service Representative C. Hardy said.

Officers found a small-caliber semi-automatic pistol inside the home, Sgt. D. Parker said.

The suspect was not holding hostages inside the home, in the 14300 block of Raven Street, he said.

The suspect barricaded himself after officers were sent to the home about 5:15 p.m. Sunday in response to a call from a family friend who said he might be suicidal, Sgt. Francisca Wheeling said.
