More Than 10K Turkeys Given Away To South LA Families In Need

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — More than 10,000 turkeys were donated Monday to needy families at the 10th annual Healthy Family Update and Turkey Giveaway.

The giveaway was sponsored by Assemblyman Isadore Hall III (D-Los Angeles), Progress California and Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy.

Those is need began lining up at 2:30 a.m. for turkeys.

"My family has been going through a lot of crisis. I lost my daughter early this year of the illness and sickness of Lupus," said Compton resident Ricky Miller.

"It's a blessing that they giving something away because God will provide for everybody, but this is a blessing," another resident added.

The event also featured free diabetes, blood pressure and BMI screenings, HIV testing, talks on hypertension, obesity, diabetes and kidney care and healthy eating tips to make it through the holidays.

"We need to make sure we do that because we have the highest level of obesity and diabetes, health problems, heart problems in our district," Assemblyman Hall said.

The event was staffed by hundreds of volunteers.
