Mira Costa High School To Be Closed Again Wednesday After Social Media Threats

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A high school in the South Bay is expected to remain closed to students Wednesday after two nonspecific threats surfaced on the social media app, Yik Yak.

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District said in a written statement Tuesday evening that Mira Costa High School will reopen Thursday.

"This decision was made based on a review of all events, consultation with the Manhattan Beach Police Department, and direct input from Mira Costa High School faculty," the statement said.

Classes were canceled at the school Tuesday, a day after a social media post prompted students to shelter-in-place.

The first threat was reported by an unidentified student and stated: "If you go to Costa you should watch out very closely at school today."

Later Monday evening, a second threat, stated: "Nice try Costa. Today was just a drill," prompting the cancellation of classes Tuesday.

Meantime, the school says they have searched the entire campus and planned to increase law enforcement patrols around the school overnight.

For the remainder of the week, school officials also said law enforcement would be beefed up in and around the school, as well as, at all schools within the district.
