Teen Fatally Struck In Crosswalk While Walking To Riverside Middle School

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A middle school student was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday while on his way to class in Riverside.

The accident took place around 7:10 a.m. at the intersection at Sierra Street and Streeter Avenue near Sierra Middle School, according to Riverside police.

Giovanni Valle, 13, was riding a scooter in a crosswalk when he was truck by a 44-year-old driver, according to witnesses.

"The boy was just tossed," witness Julia Atumre said.

The driver, who had pulled over and remained at the scene, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence of prescription drugs, police said. He has since been released, pending the outcome of toxicology tests.

Crisis counselors were dispatched to the school following the incident.

The investigation was ongoing.
