Ceremony Held At LAX To Honor TSA Agent, One-Year Anniversary Of Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Law enforcement officials gathered at LAX Saturday to honor a TSA officer that was fatally shot at the airport last year.

Gerardo Hernandez, 39, of Porter Ranch, died on Nov. 1, 2013, after alleged gunman Paul Ciancia entered Terminal 3 just before 9:30 a.m. and opened fire.

Hernandez was fatally struck and six others were injured during the incident.

He was reportedly transferred in full cardiac arrest to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, where he later died.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office reported that Hernandez died within two to five minutes of being shot 12 times by the suspected gunman.

His death was officially ruled as a homicide, officials explained.

According to authorities, Hernandez was the first TSA officer to be killed in the line of duty in the agency's 12-year history.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the union that represents TSA officers, explained Hernandez was a behavior detection officer that recently transferred from Montana.

His widow and children recently filed a liability lawsuit for $25 million, that alleged security lapses and delayed medical care contributed to Hernandez's death.

Ciancia, 23, has since pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, and remains in federal custody at an undisclosed medical facility.

The ceremony encompassed a wreath laying, flag presentation and a performance by the TSA LAX Chorus

An airport-wide moment of silence was held at 9:20 a.m. Saturday to honor Hernandez.
