Brothers Sentenced To Prison In High School Campus Stabbing-Murder

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A jury convicted two gang members Friday for the murder of an 18-year-old man on the campus of Cleveland High School in Reseda, officials said.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Anthony Carpio, 18, and Michael Steven Carpio, 20, were both found guilty of one count each of second-degree murder.

A third co-defendant, Michelle Pineda, 20, pleaded no contest on Oct. 20 to one felony count of accessory after the fact with knowledge of the crime.

On Aril 24, 2013, the Carpio brothers, who were both members of the Rockwood Street Gang, approached Kevin Orellana as he played handball at Cleveland High School.

The brothers reportedly issued a challenge against Orellana before the fatal attack occured, the district attorney explained.

Witnesses reported a fight broke out and Anthony stabbed Orellana. The brothers then ran into a getaway vehicle driven by Pineda.

A jury also found gang allegations to be true for both defendants. A knife-use allegation was found true for Anthony, who carried out the fatal stabbing.

If convicted, the Carpio brothers will face a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.

They are scheduled to make another court appearance on Dec. 9 in Van Nuys.

Pineda is expected to be sentenced on Nov. 4 to spend two years in state prison.

Orellana was not a gang member, authorities reported.
