Caught On Video: SUV Driver Kills Man, 20, In South LA Crosswalk

HARBOR CITY (CBSLA.com) — Police are looking for a driver who killed a 20-year-old pedestrian in South Los Angeles earlier this month.

California Highway Patrol released video Wednesday of the black SUV, possibly a Mazda, that struck Luis Guerrero in a crosswalk Oct. 3 in the unincorporated area of Harbor City.

The motorist was speeding south when Guerrero was hit, around 9:15 p.m., at Vermont Avenue and 110th Street, the CHP said.

Guerrero was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

His family is still in shock.

"I'm very upset about it," said Guerrero's father, Adrian.

The Guerrero family told CBS2/KCAL9's Juan Fernandez that the victim had just left his job at a grocery store and was walking home from the Metro stop.

Guerrero searched police stations and hospitals for three days before authorities notified him about about the hit-and-run: "We'd been searching hospitals, but nobody gave us any clue. ... I want some answers about it."

Fernandez was unable to reach the hospital for a comment.

CHP said it's unclear why it was unable to locate Guerrero's father. It said it is working to enhance surveillance video for clues.

Guerrero said he hopes the footage will help catch the person who ran down his son down: "That give us a little hope to catch the people who did this. Before, we had no clue. Now, we have something."

Relatives said Guerrero, an Animo Locke Technology High School graduate, helped take care of his sister and two brothers.

The CHP is asking anyone with information to contact Investigator Esquivel or Officer Allen at (310) 642-3939.
