Emotional Vigil Held For 18-Year-Old Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver In Santa Ana

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com)  —  An emotional vigil was held Sunday for an 18-year-old man killed by an alleged drunk driver in Santa Ana.

The three-vehicle crash occurred just after 9 p.m. Saturday. authorities said.

Herbert Calderon was reportedly driving drunk -- and with a suspended license from a previous DUI arrest -- when he ran a red light and slammed into a car that held passenger Robert Rubio.

The crash occurred just minutes from his home.

KCAL9's Brittney Hopper spoke to Rubio's distraught friends Sunday. His family was too upset to talk.

They came all day and night to the crash scene, Hopper reported.

"They brought balloons, flowers and candles," she reported.

"He was a good guy," said one friend, choking back tears.

"Everyone enjoyed being around him. He was a really good guy," said friend Jose Velez.

"He was so nice. He always had a smile. He was always happy," said another friend.

Rubio's friends told Hopper that just minutes before the crash, friends had picked him up to go to a party.

Rubio's friends  are angry that Calderon was behind the wheel of a car, especially with a previous DUI charge and a suspended license.

The friends said if he hadn't been driving, Rubio would still be alive.

Friends say Rubio had just graduated from high school and was working at a local towing company.
