Tensions Escalate Between Slain Mayor's Brother, Wife At Memorial Service
WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Tensions escalated at Monday's public memorial service for Bell Gardens Mayor Daniel Crespo.
Crespo's brother, among the loved ones present at Rose Hills Memorial Chapel in Whittier, became emotional when he was asked about his brother's wife, who shot him during an argument and who was also present at the service.
"She didn't have to kill my brother. I miss him a lot, and it hurts me a lot. I want my brother back," William Crespo said before walking into the service. "I want justice. That's all I want is justice."
Deputies say Crespo's wife, Levette Crespo, 43, shot her husband several times Sept. 30 during a family argument. Investigators interviewed Levette, but she was not arrested, pending a decision by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office on whether or not charges would be filed.
On Oct. 7, Crespo's son, Daniel Crespo Jr., said that his mother acted in self-defense.
Authorities say the mayor punched his 19-year-old son in the face before he was shot several times by his wife. The 45-year-old mayor was pronounced dead at a hospital.
William Crespo, meanwhile, says he believes Levette killed her husband after learning that he had an affair.
Private services are scheduled for Tuesday for Crespo's immediate family.
