Passenger, 20, Standing Outside Stalled Car On 60 Freeway Fatally Hit

MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com)   —  Officials said that a passenger standing outside a stalled car on the 60 Freeway was killed just before midnight Friday evening.

The passenger, identified by the Coroner as 20-year-old Christian Martinez of Moreno Valley, was standing in the carpool lane when struck.

Martinez was declared dead at the scene, officials said.

The victim had been a passenger riding in a 1997 Honda Civic that crashed into a center median around 11:25 p.m. on the westbound 60 near Nason Street, the CHP said.

The car blocked lanes and Martinez stepped outside the vehicle, the CHP reported.

About six minutes later, the driver of a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta couldn't avoid the Civic and struck its left side. The Jetta also struck Martinez, officials said.

Both cars blocked the carpool lane and two other lanes for nearly two hours.

Two passengers in the Jetta were taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The drivers of both vehicles were able to escape major injury, according to the CHP.
