Transgender Woman Fatally Shot In East Hollywood

EAST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A transgender woman was fatally shot early Thursday morning in East Hollywood.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 600 block of N. Kenmore Avenue, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim lying on the sidewalk, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Officials said a struggled occurred between the unidentified woman and approximately three Hispanic men before several shots were fired.

The victim was transported to County-USC Medical Center where she later died in surgery.

Detectives originally thought the crime was a botched robbery, but later said a motive was unclear.

"We can't confirm either way, because we don't know if there was any property lost," said. Det. Julian Pere. "We saw that the individual did have money on their person and other items."

Authorities were also looking into the possibility of a hate crime.

Detectives said the shooting was captured on surveillance video and that the suspects fled on foot.

Anyone with information should contact LAPD's Rampart Division at (213)484-3400.
