SWAT Team Kills Man Barricaded In Highland Home After He Fatally Shoots Relative

HIGHLAND (CBSLA.com) – A SWAT team fatally shot an armed man holed up inside a Highland home Wednesday with a woman, a 4-year-old child and an infant.

Officials later revealed the gunman shot the woman, who later died from her injuries.

It started around 1:30 p.m., when a man called police to say a relative was holding his wife and his two children hostage inside a residence near Osbun Road and Fisher Street, according to Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The man said the suspect was either his or his wife's cousin.

Police arrived and called a SWAT team to the scene. They said their attempts to negotiate with the suspect proved unsuccessful.

"The suspect continued to display the fact that he was armed with a shotgun. As SWAT personnel continued to talk to the suspect, he continued to threaten that he would shoot the victims inside the home," Miller said. "A deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck and pronounced deceased at the scene."

Officials said deputies opened fire after the suspect pulled out his gun and tried to shoot them.

Neighbor Joe Morales said: "They were pretty much all at a standoff and then we heard five or six shots go off at the same time. And then it was pretty much silent after that."

The woman was airlifted to a hospital and later died.

The two children were not injured.

It's unclear why the gunman decided to hold the family hostage.
