Portion Of Sunset Strip Reopened; Crews Continue Water Main Break Repairs
WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Traffic was flowing again on Sunset Boulevard Sunday as a portion of the area has reopened following a water main break that shut down traffic earlier this week.
Officials reported that two Eastbound and one Westbound lane had reopened late Saturday night.
Department of Water and Power (DWP) officials stated that a 36-inch pipe-line burst just before 3 p.m. Friday in the area of Sunset Boulevard and Olive Drive near La Cienega Boulevard.
The pipe-line, was originally laid in 1917, caused about a mile-long stretch of street closure to the Sunset Strip area.
About 10,000 gallons of water spewed per minute, snarling traffic and disrupting local businesses in the area.
On Saturday, DWP crews tweeted that the water flow had been controlled nearly 19 hours after the massive water main break occurred.
There were no reports of significant damage to homes or businesses in the area.
A massive hole could be seen Sunday in the roadway between Crescent Heights Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard, where work has been done to repair the broken pipe-line.
Due to the size of the pipe, it took longer to make repairs, DWP workers said.
Officials said they expected the area to remain slow for the next couple of days.
According to authorities, one Westbound lane on Sunset Boulevard will remained closed until Tuesday.
