Younger Voters Urged To Register At USC, CSULA Rallies

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A pair of student rallies were being held Tuesday at the University of Southern California and California State University, Los Angeles, as part of National Voter Registration Day.

Over 2,000 groups have signed up to host registration drives registering hundreds of thousands of voters as part of what organizers say is the largest single-day effort of the year to register voters.

Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO that with more than one million eligible citizens registered to vote, the non-partisan effort seeks to encourage students and surrounding communities to register and vote in the upcoming November 4, 2014 General Election.

"Our goal today is to get out there and spread the word that voter registration is the important first step towards voter participation, and that it's relatively easy and painless to do," said Logan.

There are currently over 4.8 million total registered voters in LA County, according to LAVote.net.

In 2012, younger people became the largest group of registered voters overall, but Logan said getting them to head to their polling place is an entirely different issue.

"The challenge is translating that into voter turnout on Election Day when that particular age demographic tends to show up at a lower percentage," he said.

Eligible citizens can also register to vote online.
