LASD Launches Body Camera Pilot Program At Four Patrol Stations

MONTEREY PARK (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department on Monday launched a body-worn camera pilot program at four patrol stations.

The six-month program formally initiated Sept. 1 will evaluate the feasibility of utilizing a Body Worn Camera System for Sheriff's Department personnel to record interactions with the public. It will also include file-management software, a cloud-based storage solution and an evaluation of future department policy.

The evaluation will be performed at four sheriff's patrol stations: Lancaster, Temple, Century and Carson.

In July 2013, the LASD began plans for performing a no-cost test and evaluation of a camera system. After completing extensive research and a request for information, four manufacturers were selected to participate. A total of 96 devices will be issued to department personnel, who will voluntarily take part.

Deputies will be trained on the how to use the device, its maintenance and how to upload and retrieve video files for viewing and evidence. They will then provide weekly evaluations to the department project manager about their experiences.

As assessment report will be prepared at the end of the test phase, which concludes March 1, 2015.
