Man Fatally Shot In Hawthorne After Gathering With Family To Plan Funeral Of Loved One

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a man was shot and killed in Hawthorne after gathering with relatives at a home where funeral arrangements were being made for a loved one who had recently passed.

The unidentified man in his 20s was shot about 3 a.m. in the 4000 block of West 138th Street in Hawthorne, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Relatives of the victim told CBS2's Joy Benedict that he lived in the area and may have been walking home at the time.

Benedict reports that more than 40 shots were fired but it's unclear whether the shots came from the suspect (s), the victim, or friends of the victim. It also remains unclear how many shooters were being sought.

Police told Benedict that two people were detained although their connection to the incident remains unclear.

No further information was immediately available.
