Intruder, 25, Shot By Van Nuys Homeowner Charged With Assault

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 25-year-old man was charged Friday with breaking into a guesthouse in Van Nuys and threatening to kill the homeowner.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Grachia Nalbandyan of Glendale faces one count each of assault with a deadly weapon, making criminal threats and attempted grand-theft auto.

Nalbandyan entered the home in the 6200 block of Matilija Avenue around 11 p.m. Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Officers said a struggle occurred after Nalbandyan threatened to kill the victim.

He managed to hit the victim with a glass measuring cup and proceeded toward the main house, authorities explained.

According to officials, the victim was able to retrieve his handgun and followed Nalbandyan yelling for him to leave while firing multiple shots into the ground.

In response, Nalbandyan threatened to kill the victim again, police said. The suspect then shot him once in the hip. Nalbandyan then attempted to escape by stealing a car, authorities said.

The Los Angeles Police Department said Nalbandyan has an extensive criminal record and is on federal probation for possession of a firearm.

He was denied bail because the break-in was a violation of his probation.

An arraignment is set for Oct. 7 in Los Angeles.

If convicted, Nalbandyan faces a maximum sentence of more than seven years in state prison.
