Vacationing Southern Californians Hit Hard By Hurricane Odile

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Southern Californians who traveled to Cabo San Lucas for a sun-soaked vacation found the opposite, thanks to Hurricane Odile.

Storms pummeled the resorts, flooding hotel rooms, boats and streets, causing damage to buildings and forcing tourists to huddle in their bathrooms.

Vikki and Scott Madrigal of Valencia were supposed to go home Monday from their vacation, but the airport has been shut down. Their daughter, Brittany Field, says her parents are staying in a cabana-style resort, which meant they had nowhere to run.

"It's been scary. I have been in little contact with my mom. The only contact I've gotten is text messages," Field said.

Hotels, many of which were forced to turn off air conditioning systems as the storm raged, turned ballrooms and staircases into shelters.

KNX1070 reporter Mike Landa is among the Southern Californians trapped by Hurricane Odile. Landa and his wife also rode out the storm in their bathroom.

"The windows were just shaking and then on the other side was a door and a hallway, and the hallway became like a wind tunnel," Landa said.

Parts of Cabo and its airport suffered damage. So, vacationers like the Madrigals are relying on relatives here to help them stay on top of when they'll be able to come home.

"She asked me when the closest flights were, what time flights were going to start, I've been searching, doing research on trying to find out what they can do," Field said.

It's not clear when flights between Los Angeles and Cabo will resume.
