Water Main Break Causes Sinkhole On Busy Torrance Street

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — A broken water main caused a sink hole in a busy South Bay street Tuesday.

The 8-inch water main break was reported around 2:20 a.m. near the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and 179th Street in Torrance, the city's public works department said.

The pipes are believed to be about 60 years old.

"If we can clamp it, it's going to be a quick fix. If we have to cut it in pieces, you know there's probably a split or a hole in the main and we have to cut the bad piece out and replace it with a new main," Andy Darlack of the City of Torrance said.

Flow to the main was eventually shut off and two multi-unit apartment complexes were left without water. Service was expected to be restored by 11 a.m.

Officials said the break could be blamed on corrosion or soil conditions.
