Aliso Viejo School Closed Through Wednesday Due To Threat

ALISO VIEJO (CBSLA.com) — A "potentially threatening" email sent to a Catholic school led administrators to cancel classes Tuesday and Wednesday.

Authorities were contacted Monday after St. Mary's, a campus that serves about 800 students from preschool through middle school, in Aliso Viejo received an unspecified threat, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

Officials declined to discuss the nature of the threat, but sent deputies to the campus immediately to begin an investigation in conjunction with school security.

At the Sheriff's Department's request, all school activities were held inside Monday.

Authorities later determined the campus was safe, but requested the school remain closed until an investigation was complete.

"We're all concerned about the safety of our kids," one parent said.

School administrators sent an email to parents Monday night.

"The safety of our students is our top priority. We will not be holding school until the Sheriff's Department determines there is not a credible threat and that our students, faculty and staff can safely return to school," Head of School Sharon Taylor said.

Last week, Fountain Valley High School received a bomb and campus shooting threat via email from a student's account that was hacked.

It was later determined the threat was a hoax, but classes were canceled Wednesday.

Authorities would not comment on if the two incidents were related.

"I don't want to speculate on drawing any connections between any other school campuses," Lt. Jeff Hallock said.
