Amber Alert Canceled After 5-Year-Old Boy Is Safely Recovered

SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com) — The California Highway Patrol says it has canceled an Amber Alert for a 5-year-old boy who was allegedly abducted from San Diego County on Saturday evening.

The alert for Johnnie Melendez was issued Sunday morning about 10:10 a.m., hours after the child had allegedly been taken.

As of 12:30 p.m., the child's mother allegedly appeared at the Lancaster Sheriff's Station, and directed authorities to Melendez's whereabouts.

At the time, the child was with relatives in Lancaster, according to a watch commander, who added that the mother was apprised of the Amber Alert after seeing her description on freeway signs.

Deputies subsequently recovered Melendez, who appeared to be okay.

The mother was reported to have been detained at the station.

No further information was immediately available.
