Family Of Man Fatally Shot In South LA Seeking Answers

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police on Monday identified a 27-year-old man fatally shot while riding motorized bikes with a friend who was also shot over the weekend.

According to officials, the suspect fired multiple times at Daryl Eugene Gatewood and his friend, Anthony Simon, just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday as they left a bike shop, where Gatewood worked.

KCAL9's Laurie Perez spoke with the victim's grieving family members, who seek answers about the crime.

"He had a family here that loved him," said Cynthia Wilder, mother of Gatewood. "I hope whoever did this, I hope you rot in hell."

Los Angeles Police Department officers were dispatched to East 54th Street and South Central Avenue, where they found Gatewood with multiple gunshot wounds and Simon with a wound to a leg.

Officials transported both men to a hospital for treatment of their injuries.

"He just started shooting, fired on him three times," said Simon. "He came across the lane. The third shot, I think it hit him in the head and like flipped him off the bike."

Simon underwent surgery. Gatewood later died of his injuries at the hospital, authorities said.

"He was a hard-working boy; why did y'all do this to us?" asked Chawanna Bryant, cousin of Gatewood.

A description of the suspect has not been released; however, police said he was last seen walking north in the 5400 block of South Central Avenue.

Officers said the motive of this shooting is unclear, and they have not found a gang connection to this crime.
