ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A teenage foreign exchange student drowned while staying with a family in Orange County.

The drowning happened in the 800 block of West North Street in Anaheim Wednesday night.

Authorities say the 16-year-old Chinese student went for a swim at his host family’s home and started to struggle when he swam in to the deep end.

Several people tried to rescue the boy as emergency crews made their way to the scene.

The teen was transported to a local hospital in critical condition where he later died.
