Mother, 2 Children In Critical Condition After Being Pulled From Pool At Hollywood Motel

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A mother and two children are in critical condition Monday after they were pulled from a motel pool in Hollywood.

Los Angeles City Fire Department personnel were called to the Hollywood Premiere motel in the 5000 block of Hollywood Boulevard on a report of a drowning about 3:30 p.m.

A LAPD spokesman says the mother and four children were at the 7 1/2-foot-deep pool when two of the children, a boy and girl ages 11 and 12, wandered into the deep end and struggled to swim.

"While in the pool area, two of those children drifted into the deep end and she observed them to be in distress," LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said. "Although she couldn't swim, she attempted to save them and she too was quickly overcome.

"Two other children at the scene who did not go to that end of the pool began screaming and a good Samaritan heard those screams hopped over the wall ... and he was able to get in the pool and get all three victims out," Montgomery said.

Fire officials say the victims were in cardiac arrest when transported to hospitals.

KCAL9/CBS2's Serene Branson reports the father was across the street picking up lunch at the time of the incident.

Firefighters say no one in the family was a good swimmer.

The good Samaritan, who just learned CPR last week, was too shaken up to speak on camera.

A witness said he was walking past the motel when he saw the scene.

"I saw the paramedics trying to resuscitate a mother and her two children. ... It was very sad, especially seeing the father. He was just going crazy and shouting and trying to go into the pool," Martin Saucedo said.

The motel pool did not have a lifeguard present, although the pool is fenced in.

LAPD officials say the incident does not appear to be suspicious.
