LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — Customers of Costco, Trader Joe’s and other major retailers are being warned of a nationwide recall of specific lots of its fresh peaches, plums, nectarines and pluots over concerns of possible listeria contamination.

KNX 1070’s Bob Brill reports Central California produce company Wawona Packing says on its website that no illnesses have been reported and the recall is a precautionary measure.

The company said the recalled fruit was packed and shipped to retailers from June 1 through July 12.

In a statement, Wawona President Brent Smittcamp said the recall came after internal testing at the packing house in Tulare County. The company has since shut down the lines, retrofitted some equipment and sanitized the facility.

“We are aware of no illnesses related to the consumption of these products” said Smittcamp. ” By taking the precautionary step of recalling product, we will minimize even the slightest risk to public health, and that is our priority.”

Subsequent tests have been negative, according to Smittcamp.

Listeria bacteria can cause a dangerous flu-like illness in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Consumers with questions can contact Wawona Packing at 1-888-232-9912 Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. or visit the company’s website.
