LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A local civil rights leader is demanding that the CHP name the officer involved in an assault of a homeless woman on Tuesday that was caught on cell phone video.
Earl Ofari Hutchinson, President of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, is calling on CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow to release the officer’s name.
The CHP said they were investigating the incident that occurred on the 10 Freeway near a La Brea Avenue on-ramp.
The assault video — captured by David Diaz, a music producer — has gone viral.
The video shows the unidentified officer punching an unidentified woman (known only as Marilyn) as many as 15 times in the face.
“We are just appalled and shocked that the CHP which has been held in high regard since the Rodney King beating would brutalize an unarmed, non-resisting civilian,” Hutchinson said.
“In addition to the identity of the CHP officer, we are demanding a face to face meeting with CHP commissioner Farrow to discuss departmental polices, procedures, and punishment for officers that use excessive force,” Hutchinson added.
